The most common reasons I have been told that parents/carers don’t buy sunglasses for children are:

  • They don’t wear the sunglasses
  • They break the sunglasses
  • The sunglasses are too expensive
  • They loose their sunglasses
  • The parents don’t know of the need to have sunglasses for their children.
  • While, I agree that all of these reasons are valid, it is really important to protect your children’s eyes from the sun.  So I will address all of them in turn.  As it is incredibly important that children wear sunglasses, from when they are babies.
  • Firstly it is much easier to get a child to wear sunglasses, if they have been wearing them since they were a baby.  So the earlier you start the better.  If you make it part of the going outside routine, for example: no hat, no sunscreen, no sunglasses, no play.  Then the child expects that they need to complete these tasks to be able to go outside to play.
  • As parents our job, isn’t always easy.  But it is our job to make the best choices for our children as they are unable to make these decisions that will affect them later in life for themselves, especially when they are very small.

If your child is like mine and prone to breaking things, then it can get quite expensive.  You will no doubt be as excited as I was to find the Babiator brand of sunglasses, as they extremely flexible and have a lost/breakage warranty.

To address the fact sunglasses are too expensive, we have chosen brands that are good quality and reasonably priced.  Especially when you consider the Babiator brand does come with the lost/breakage warranty and incredible frame flexibility.  Though to put it bluntly, what is your child’s vision worth to you.

Ultra-violet damage to our eyes is cumulative, starting from when we are first taken outside to get in the car for the ride home from the hospital.  So please consider the implications if you don’t have sunglasses on your children.
