Did you know that there are options to protect your child’s vision while they are playing sport? The options don’t necessarily have to have prescription lenses (a correction) in them either.

Protection while swimming can be a simple as a pair of swimming goggles. Wearing swimming goggles protects your eyes from exposure to the chlorine and other chemicals used in swimming pools. We love the Aqua Sphere swimming goggles because they don’t sit in the actual eye socket and put all of the pressure around the eye. Which also leaves the large red rings around your eyes after swimming training. They also have wide peripheral vision, so you aren’t limited to looking straight ahead and having to turn your head to see.

Some swimming goggles are much better than none, please make sure that they have 100% UV protection as the glare while swimming can be quite high.

What about contact sports like soccer, or basketball? The sports goggles provide the best protection against eye damage from the ball, fingers or elbows. They are actually the optical frame of choice for both of these sports and many others. The incidence of eye injury while playing sport is relatively high, especially in sports that include balls and close contact of players.

With respect to ball sports like tennis, squash and lacrosse. There are recorded injuries that can be quite debilitating and effect vision for life. Such that squash and lacrosse actually have rules that involve players wearing certified eye protection. At this time there are no rules around tennis, though the use of sunglasses as both a barrier against eye injury and sun damage to the eye, would be advisable.

The long and short of it, is that if you would like to protect your child’s vision, now and into the future. Then you need to be conscious of the risks that your child can be facing daily and how you can minimise or remove these risks.
