Creating a health eye environment, is not something we think about on a regular basis.  But by actually thinking about positive changes you can make, you will have happier and healthier eyes.  Here are some of the areas that you need to consider to create a healthy eye environment.

Lighting is incredibly important.  We all know how much better we can see outside in sunlight.  You need to have good even lighting, without bright or dark patches.

The next is a tricky one, as we all are so busy these days and forget to slow down and put ourselves first.  You need to be taking regular breaks from reading or close work to give your eyes a rest.  Computer sessions are always limited and should include short breaks where you are able to relax your vision by looking in the far distance.  The regular breaks should be no less than 5-10minutes every hour, while ideally a short break every 20 minutes would be really beneficial and make your eyes much happier at the end of the day.

Computer monitors should be positioned at, or slightly below eye level.  This may mean having the tables at the correct height and having chairs that are adjustable.  The font size on the computer screens is an appropriate size for everyone to read or can be easily adjusted.  The colour of the writing versus the background is appropriate for everyone to read.

There should be lots of time spent in outdoor play.  This should be varied to include games, climbing, exploring, building and general play.

Screen time is limited to no more than 2 hours at a time and the child is to sit back as far as possible from the screen.  Glare and reflections from the windows are to be limited, while still maintaining adequate light.

Sunglasses and broad-brimmed hats are to be worn outside to protect eyes from UV exposure.

A diet including lots of fruit, vegetables, nuts and fish is advised as they contain lots of nutrients, such as anti-oxidants, Vitamin A and omega 3 fatty acids, which are important for eye health.

Regular visits to the Optometrist are encouraged, as many eye problems are easy to correct if detected early.
